Xiaomi Redmi 4 Review

Xiaomi is known to release excellent phones in terms of features and looks at moderate to cheap price. Yet another budget phone is announced which is priced at 10,999 INR and is available on Amazon store. Xiaomi has been successful in reaching the user fans in terms of it's features and price. It has been listed in many editors' listings of top budget phones.

Xiaomi Redmi 4 (not to be confused with Redmi Note 4) is a budget phone which comes with some excellent features and it also out performs many mobiles in this segment.

DESIGN

Xiaomi Redmi 4 has a unibody metal design which gives it a premium look. The display is a 5 inch display with navigation capacitive touch buttons at the bottom. These buttons are not backlit. There is a notification LED light at the bottom which is useful to check your notifications. The bottom edge has the micro usb charging cable slot with grills on either side but only one has the actual loud speaker while the other is only a design gimmick.

The power and volume buttons are on the right. The top edge has IR blaster along with the 3.5 mm jack. The phone has hybrid dual sim card slot of which am not a big fan. You have to sacrifice a slot for either sim card or a micro sd memory card. The main camera is a 13 megapixel shooter with a protective metallic rim around the camera lens. The fingerprint sensor is located below the main camera and is very easy to reach. The secondary camera is a 5 megapixel shooter.

Looks wise, Xiaomi Remi 4 looks very much premium build and has very good looks. It weighs around 150 grams with a thickness of 8.65 mm.

SPECS AND FEATURES

Xiaomi Redmi 4 is powered by 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 435, Octa Core processor accompanied by 4 GB of RAM. It handles multitasking with ease and there was no lag at all. It runs on Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 over Xiaomi's MIUI. It is expected to get Android Nougat update soon.

Xiaomi's custom UI, the MIUI gives plenty of useful tweaks such as dual app mode, quick ball mode and single handed mode. You can also take screenshots of an entire web page by scrolling screenshot mode. It also has plenty of Xiaomi's own preinstalled apps such as Music, News, Mi Picks and many others. It also has third party apps preinstalled such as Amazon and SwiftKey.

The display of Xiamoi Redmi 4 is a 5 inch IPS LCD display with 2.5D curved glass. It is protected by Corning Gorilla glass. The display modes can be tweaked to night mode or reading mode with which the hue and brightness will be adjusted according to the mode you switch to.

The display has a resolution of 720 X 1280 pixles at the rate of 294 pixels per inch. It is a HD screen not a full HD. The resolution is little underwhelming on paper, at 294 pixels per inch, the display may not be vivid under direct sunlight.

The phone has 64 GB of internal memory which can be expandable to 128 GB.

The main camera does a decent job in bright light conditions. It has 13 megapixel main camera with f/2.0 aperture. It has phase detection auto focus mode (PDAF), low light mode, burst mode, HDR mode etc. The camera struggles in low light and also in natural dull lit conditions(Dawn and Dusk). HDR mode makes the image capture very laggy. I hope they will fix this with software updates. The front camera also struggles to take decent pics. The camera is the area where I was disappointed.

Xiaomi Redmi 4 has a massive 4100 mAh battery which will last for nearly 2 days on a single full charge. It has few power saving modes with which you can extend battery life still further.

VERDICT

  • Decent phone with great specs and feature.
  • Excellent build quality and design.
  • Poor camera
