How to Partition Your SD Card for Android Without PC?

The Android OS has lot of scope in development and user flexibility. This helps developers and users to modify the architecture of the system. The mobile can be modified in several ways. Thanks the Open source by Google.

Mobiles with low internal memory thrive a lot in terms of performance and usage. You can extend this limit by partitioning your SD card and expanding the ROM of your mobile. So let us know how to partition SD card and why is a partition needed.

What is Partitioning SD card?
In simple terms partitioning sd card is breaking your sd card into two parts and making one part accessible for mobile (making it as internal memory) and other part for user. No matter how large you make the partition, the more the internal space better the performance of the phone.

Why is it needed?
Primarily to increase the ROM of the mobile. To make the device link to the newly created partition. By this you can link the applications that are installed on phone memory to the created partition thus freeing up more internal space. Your mobile becomes faster and there will be lot of space available for you.

How it is done?
There are several ways by which you can partition your SD card. You can do it by few softwares available for PC. But in this guide I will show you how to make a partition without any tedious downloads and intense use of technical skills.

DISCLAIMER: AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE IF YOU HAVE ANY ERRORS OR DAMAGES OF SD CARDS/MOBILES. PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK

Requirements
1)Rooted mobile - Your mobile has to be rooted for super user access. If your mobile isn't rooted this will not work for you. If you want to get your mobile rooted, contact me with your phone name, model, OS version and baseband number. I will be glad to help you.

2)Busy Box - Busy Box must me installed on your mobile. This will install required repositories for your mobile. Download Busy Box from Play Store.

3)Aparted - This is the primary app that does the partitioning process. Download it from here.

NOTE: Aparted should be installed on phone memory only. Do not move this app to SD card.

  • First backup your SD card to PC. The partitioning process will erase all you SD card contents. So be careful before proceeding.
  • After the backup, install BusyBox described above. Then go to settings -> storage -> unmount the SD card. This process will work only when you unmount the SD card or else you will get error.
  • Open Aparted and select the tab "create" and tap on green "plus" button. You will be prompted to create the first partition. This partition will be accessible for user as external storage. You can select the amount of space according to your choice. If you are using 4 GB SD card (3.69 will accessible) make a 2 GB first partition. Select the type as FAT 32 and select apply changes by pressing options menu. This will create a primary partition of your desired space by erasing all the SD card contents which is used as external storage.

  • After finishing the primary partition select tools. You will be shown parts as part 1 and part 2 available for your SD card. You can make several parts of your SD card so. But preferably go for two partitions. Higher amount of partitions need more technical skill.. Now the first part is the primary partition you made and the second part is the remaining space which will be used by mobile as internal memory. Select the check box on the remaining second part and tap on create (or apply changes). Select FAT32 option for this part also. Now the app will create a second partition.

  • That's it you have successfully created partition on your SD card. Reboot your device and go to settings -> storage, where you can see the external storage available is similar to the space you opted for first partition.
  • Install Link2SD from Google Play Store and run the app. The app will immediately prompt you that second partition is found and asks you to mount the scripts. Mount the script as FAT 32 and once mounting is done it will again prompt you to reboot the device. Reboot the mobile and open Link2SD, select options and check the option 'Automatically link newly installed apps to SD'. This will enable the app to automatically link your new downloaded apps to the partition you have created. You can also manually link the previously installed apps to SD by clicking on the app in Link2SD and selecting create link.
  •  You can also see the partition space by clicking options in Link2SD and select storage info. It will show storage details of your phone, the partition you have created and also the external storage.

Now enjoy by linking as many apps you can to partition and free up more internal memory. You will see increased performance of your mobile.

NOTE: This process may damage your SD card if misused. Proceed with caution

Tip: You can also repair the damaged SD card with Aparted app which will generally happen by faulty connections to PC or any other error during data transfer between SD card and PC.

Bugs and Issues Fix for People having Problem in Partitioning:

  • Please do a complete format after backing up your sd card.
  • Don't forget to install BusyBox before starting the procedure. Install BusyBox after formatting your sd card.
  • If you are having sd card greater than 4GB, go for ext2 option while creating partitions. If you are having 4GB or less go for FAT32.
  • Some unsupported memory cards will show errors after creating partition during mounting scripts in Link2sd. Please use supported sd cards.

UPDATE: The Aparted app might have been updated and there can be changes in the menu order or variety of options. But the overall procedure is same. Please look into the options carefully.

    2. In aParted, go to the Tools tab. locate your 2nd partition which should be "empty" after initially partitioning your card aParted. The first partition will be mounted and showing as Fat32. select the empty partition and bring up "create" in the drop-down list (it's under "part 4" in the interface). If you press whatever word is showing, you will see more choices, you want "create"- Hit "Apply" and you will be given choices as to what kind of partition you want, chose "ext4" - Sometimes you may have to use "f2fs", do that if you get an error in Link2SD. Press OK and it will format. After you do this, don't reboot yet. Go into "Settings" under "Storage" - Actually, my Settings app is a little different - Look for an item called "Default Write Disk" and there should be "Phone Storage" and "SDcard" - you want to change this to "Phone Storage", exit out of that, then install Link2SD - But don't run it, reboot first, do a full reboot. After it comes back up, then open Link2SD, it will prompt you to link your new partition, and choose "ext4" or "f2fs" depending on which one you used. The device will then reboot again, and when it comes back up, your Default Write Disk under Storage should be set back to SDcard. At that point, you can use either Link2SD or Apps2SD, I use Apps2SD because it has a setting which automatically moves all new apps to SD storage, including all of the odex, dex, libs, data and obbs. It's best to do all of this before you have installed many user apps, so the best way to do this is after you have flashed your device and you have a fresh FS on the whole thing.

Please re-check the procedures and steps mentioned above carefully once again. This process will work for almost all mobiles. The error can happen only if the sd card you have is not supported by this app or your sd card is little bit old!

If you still have a problem, please email me with the details of your mobile model, name, number and firmware version. I will be glad to help you forward!

Hi.. is this possible for creating partitions for internal sd card? my device has 512mb internal memory and has 4g emmc card pre installed inside the phone and aside from that i can also mount up to 32g external sd. My question is if i can partition the 4g emmc internal sd card and use it instead of mounting an external sd?

    1. I guess it is not possible, your sd card's second link will be virtually simulated as internal memory. So this can be used to increase internal memory by partitioning your sd card.

    1. Thank you for the feedback Chavan. Though aparted is updated, the basic steps are same. If you are haveing an sd card greater than 4GB then you can use ext2 option for partitioning in aparted. If you are having 4GB or less go for FAT32. Everything works fine with that.

Before you start partitioning, completely format your sd card and follow the steps as mentioned above. It will defiitely work. Some unsupported memory cards will not work or will show errrs while mounting scripts.

    1. Leave obb data files in internal memory only. Don't move it to sd card. Even though you move your game or app to sd card, some part of the game or app will be left in internal memory. This is true in case of games. So try not to move the obb or data files to sd card. If still there is a problem, let me know.

    2. Yes it may be compatibility issue. Some sd cards are not supported by aparted. You have to format the sd card and then install the BusyBox. Aparted will do its job once you start creating partitions. Try to follow the process once again with the same sd card. Note that to install BusyBox after formatting the sd card.

If this process is not helping you, try with another sd card.

Maybe I have to improve in grammar, LOL!

The second part is very easy to create once you have created first part. After creating first part you will see two parts in the app. First part is the primary partition that you have created which is accessible for user and second part which will be shown empty. Select the second part (Check box) and tap on "create". Select FAT32 option for the second part also.

After that reboot your mobile and mount the scripts through Link2SD.

I hope you understood what I've said. If you still have problems, please let me know. I will try further harder.

    1. Instead of moving apps select "create link" for the app you want to move to sd card. By creating the link, you will link the app to the partition you created. This will not move the app to the primary partition such that your sd card's memory is consumed.

So you should select "create link" instead of moving the app to sd card.

  41. I used AParted app, to partition SD card. But when I create partition, I don't pay attention to the Selection field that chose Fat16. And in the Tool section, I click to apply that partition, after that I try to delete that partition but can't because it's in use. And I turn off phone, it don't boot again. Maybe Fat16 write to the system files that connected to computer appeared Nokia Connection.

    1. Please note that that partitioning sd card will not show an increase in your phone memory. It will just reduce the memory of the sd card since the partition you have created will not be available for sd card.

Please try to delete the partition using the same app and try to repeat the process. Also please note that some sd cards are not supported by this app.

  60. Thank you Dr Shash! For a clear and concise tutorial that is pretty easy even for me. I have an unusual device, a Sophone i6 Plus iPhone Clone, as an iPhone clone it is a little substandard, but it has a nice huge screen which is 720.

My settings app is different in that it looks like an iPhone Preferences.app. So, the controls I need are in Settings->General->Usage and that's where I have my Default Write Disk settings, SDcard controls where I can unmount and erase, And Phone Storage access. I;m not sure where these are in a stock Android Settings app, and I don't know if there is a stock settings app I can install. But this works, and it works well!

As far as the many people who have been saying that this is not working, well... There are a few things you have to do in a certain order. I have laid it all out here:

XweAponX's tutorial addendum for unusual devices.

Start off with aParted, proceed the way the tutorial says. Just set up your partition, I have a nice 32gig SDcard, that I installed to my Sophone at the cost of cracking the screen, because I was careless. My bad. But regardless, if you have a nice large card, you can set it up the way I did, which was 60% for the SD partition and 30% for the /data/sdext2 partition.

So... With roughly 20gb set as Fat32 and the rest "empty", reboot your device and open aParted again. Go to the Tools tab. locate your 2nd partition which should be "empty" after initially partitioning your card aParted. The first partition will be mounted and showing as Fat32. select the empty partition (which will be "Part 2") and bring up "create" in the drop-down list (it's under "part 4" in the interface). Links2SD can do this somewhat. It's best to do all of this before you have installed many user apps, so the best way to do this is after you have flashed your device and you have a fresh FS on the whole thing. That's only if you have a device that can be flashed while it is "off", like a Samsung or a MediaTek device. Other Devices like ZTE's can't be flashed that way, no tool like Odin or SPflash/MKTools.

  61. Hi. I am confused.
I have a 32gb sd card. And I want to have 5gb addition to my internal memory.
In the aparted app, I made 2 partitions
    5gb -fat32
    26gb -ext4
Which of these two should I mount in the link2sd app. Because in my first trial I chose xt4 and my phone can't start. I have to reset it first. I appreciate the reply if any. Thanks

    1. You can erase sd card with aparted or directly through settings from your mobile. Try making partitions as FAT32. One partition as Ext2 and Other as FAT32.

      Please proceed with caution.

  72. Thanks very much for this, it worked like a charm. I have a tecno g9 tab and 8gb SD card. Initially, I followed your recommendation to use ext2 format for SD card higher than 4gb but I did it several times and got the message SD card damaged, try reformatting it. But then, I repeated the process using fat32 format even though it is 8gb and everything worked perfectly even links2sdcard mounted without issues. Thanks plenty, means a lot. 👍👍

  74. Just so you know, if you make your 2nd partition a fat32 format you won't be able to move davlik files and lib files into the 2nd partition. And those files can be large and bother your internal memory. To avoid this, create your 2nd SD card partition as ext2 format and when links2sd prompt you to mount the scripts for 2nd partition, Mount the scripts as ext2. Now you can move more than just the apk files into 2nd partition as davlik and lib files of the app being moved will enter an ext2 partition not a fat32 partition.

    1. Dear Manju Natha! Thank You for the fedback and sorry for a late response. Been busy. You can either format the existing sd card or a brand new one. It doesn't matter unless which card you want to insert in your device. And regarding the supporting cards, I haven't performed the process on many sd cards and as per my experience, Sandisk sd cards works just fine. Thank You.
