Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge: First Impressions
The era of Samsung Galaxy S series is a one of the most successful time for the company. Beginning with Samsung Galaxy S2, it created a new benchmark in the history of Android smart phones and the legacy continues. But the incorporation of plastic build phones which made them look cheap when compared to other models like HTC One, M8, iPhone 5S, the Samsung Galaxy S series of mobiles (S3, S4 and S5) got severely criticized for their build quality. Samsung now have to overcome this and yes, they took a major overhaul with the Samsung Galxy S6.
Samsung revealed it's two new mobiles S6 and S6 Edge at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona. Both mobiles look almost similar except the curved screen on edges on S6 Edge. Samsung made a tremendous change in the build quality. They opted out their cheap plastic build quality and incorporated premium metal design with Gorilla glass coating on the back cover. They also come in various color options - White pearl, Black sapphire, Gold platinum, Blue Topaz.
Samsung Galaxy brothers S6 and S6 Edge come in same sizes and when seen suddenly you cannot distinguish between them exactly. Samsung made some huge changes to overcome past year's failure with S5. The screen quality is improved with massive increase in resolution. The screen resolution is 1440 X 2560 pixels with incredibly 577 pixels per inch, which is the highest in any phone till date.
The screen is 5.1 inches a full HD Super AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The Gorilla Glass is also incorporated at the back and it is a huge finger print magnet. The back cover is refractive and the color of the back cover looks different at various angles, at what you see. The back cover is not removable and you cannot swap batteries.
The back side of the phone incorporates a 16 Mega pixel camera which is improved a lot with f/1.9 lens, in fact they compared their mobile's low light comparison with their rival team's mobile, the iPhone 6 plus. And guess what the low light performance is incredible and better than iPhone 6 plus. Thanks to Optical Image Stabilization. There are lot of software improvements for camera such as double tap home button to quick launch camera and new Auto-HDR focus with which you need not focus manually to take pics in HDR mode.
They went to incorporate their own Exynos Octa core processor (Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex A53 + Quad-core 2.1 GHz Cortex A57) instead of their long associated Qualcomm. Many anticipated that these both devices will come with the 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa core Soc and most of them will disappointed I guess because the new Exynos is not tested yet. Well don't judge a book by its cover!
I was overwhelmingly disappointed with the battery capacity. S6 has 2550 mAh and S6 Edge has 2600 mAh Lithium ion battery and it is very low when compared to many mobiles with quad-core processors. But they gave a bump with faster battery charging. The mobiles can be charged wirelessly and with super charge option they will charge uptp 30% in 30 minutes. The battery is non removable and there is no micro sd card option. S6 and S6 Edge comes with 32GB, 64GB and 128GB variants.
Both mobiles come with Android Lollipop 5.0 over Samsung's new TouchWiz UI. There is also improvement in software. Multi-window is supported on both devices and improved finger print scanner. Samsung also incorporated their new Samsung - Pay to compete with Apple - Pay.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge come with many promising features especially in terms of build quality and hardware specs. What I personally disliked is that the mobiles' low battery capacity and no water proof add-on. Even the Exynos processor which is not tested yet The pricing and availability will be known o April 10, 2015.
