Sony Xperia X Performance Dual: Hands On

Sony has announced new series of mobiles, X series instead of releasing a new Z series of mobiles. The X series has lot of similar features to it's previous Z versions but there are lot of changes in design and built quality. There are lot of improvements compared to Xperia Z5 premium in terms of hardware and built quality. The new version of X series from mobile doesn't indicate a halt to Z series of mobiles, it is just a new branch from the Sony Tree.

Design:

Sony Xperia X performance Dual has similar built like Z5 but it feels much better than all Z series because it has no sharp edges and no flat glass coating, instead it has 2.5 mm rounded glass coating. The edges are rounded and the screen size is also reduced by 0.2 inches to 5 inches. It does not make much difference on paper but you can feel a lot of change in size when you hold in hand.

The top side has a 13 mega pixel front facing camera with ambient and proximity light sensor on either side of ear piece. The bottom edge has micro USB charging slot and primary microphone. The speaker grill is located on top side of the bottom below the display screen. On right side edge it has power button in middle with finger print scanner, volume rocker and dedicated camera shutter key. The top edge has 3.5 mm audio jack.

Right side of the phone lodges micro SD card and dual sim card slots. The back side of the phone lodges a 23 mega pixel camera with single LED flash and Xperia branding in middle. The phone weighs around 147 grams is 8.7 mm thick. It comes in 4 color variants, black, silver, pink and gold.

Specs and Features:

Sony Xperia X Performance dual has a 5 inch screen with 1080 X 1920 pixel resolution at the rate of 441 pixels per inch. It has a good viewing angles with Triluminous display and X-Reality Dynamic Contrast Enhancement. The screen is scratch resistant and oleophobic coated to prevent finger smudges. The sensors include ambient light sensor, gyroscope, proximity sensor, barometer, accelerometer  and of-course the finger print sensor.

Sony Xperia X performance dual has good features in terms of hardware. It comes with 2.15 GHz Qualcomm MSM 8996 Snapdragon 820 SoC accompanied by 3 GB RAM. There was little heating issue when I played some heavy games but other than that there were no issues. Multi tasking was flawless and was super smooth. Even heavy application multi tasking was superb, thanks to Android 6.0 marshmallow and Sony's UI which is similar to stock android experience.

The main camera is a 23 mega pixel shooter with 1/2.3 inch Sony Exmor RS sensor, 24 mm wide angle G lens with Optical image and video stabilization. The camera was excellent in our tests. The auto focus was very good and it is a Predictive Hybrid Auto Focus. For instance if you are video shooting a bunch of people and single tap on one person's face or body, the camera will keep on focusing that person wherever he/she moves and it is quite speed. The images in bright light were excellent with accurate color reproduction. Sadly there is no 4K video recording but only Full HD.

The front camera is 13 mega pixel shooter with 1/3 inch Exmor RS sensor, 22 mm wide angle lens, F2.0 aperture for low light conditions. The front camera is decent enough to take pics in bright conditions. With wide angle lens you can accommodate more people in your selfies. The front camera can also shoot in Full HD and also has image and video stabilization.

The phone has internal memory of 32 GB of which only 13.6 GB is usable. That makes it less than half of what it actually has. You can expand this memory up to 200 GB.

Battery capacity is 2700 mAh which I feel is pretty less when compared to other flagships which boast Snapdragon 820 SoC. On my use, the battery percentage dropped to 30% by evening on moderate usage like social networking, email checks, few calls, text messages and whatsapp. Heavy usage dropped the juice very quickly. Battery capacity was a major flaw in this flagship and by keeping it in power saving mode with limited activity, you can make the phone last one full day.

Early Verdict:

Sony Xperia X Performance dual is a very good mobile in terms of design and features when compared to it's Z series brothers especially Z5 premium. But the battery is what concerned us a lot. Rest assured it has pretty good design with rounded edges, excellent camera and smooth lag free performance. This flagship is sure gonna perform well as it says, Xperia X Performance.
