HTC U Play Specs and Features

HTC has been struggling for quite a long time since the release of HTC One series. AS the HTC One M9 did not receive the expected response from the public, HTC is fighting hard to get back it's image. HTC U Play is one such phone which grabs your attention with it's design and appearance. It is certainly a bold step when a company decides to redesign the phone completely from their trademark flagships.

DESIGN

HTC U Play comes with metal body design with glass coating on the back. The company claims that the back panel is liquid surface finished. It has HTC branding logo in the back along with 16 megapixel main camera and single LED flash.

The right side has the volume and power rocker buttons. The bottom edge has the USB Type C port, sim tray and speaker grill. The left edge of the phone is plain with no buttons or trays. The front facing camera is also a 16 megapixel shooter which is similar to Gionee A1 but it doesn't have flash. The fingerprint scanner is located at the bottom of the screen.

The edges are curved backwards for a firm grip but the back panel is quite slippery and smudge magnet. The phone is 7.9 mm thick and weighs around 145 grams which makes it slim and light weight.

SPECS AND FEATURES

HTC U Play comes with a super LCD 5.2 inch Full HD display (1080p) with 424 pixels per inch and has 2.5 D curved glass. The display is scratch proof with Gorilla Glass protection. The display is good with great viewing angles with vibrant colours and has good direct sunlight viewing.

The phone comes with 2 GHz Octa - Core Mediatek MT6755 Helio P10 processor with 4 GB of RAM. The internal memory is 64 GB which is expandable with hybrid sim card slot. The battery is a very poor choice from the company with just 2500 mAh. The battery struggles to last one full day with a moderate use. You got to keep it charging whenever you can and there is no fast charging support either.

The phone handles multi tasking very smoothly but it tends to lag when put under pressure. The phone also heats up while playing graphic heavy games. Other than that there is no complaining in day to day tasks.

HTC U Play comes with Android Marshmallow out of the box over HTC Sense UI. Am a huge fan of HTC Sense UI and this phone is no exception to impress me in this department. It is expected to get the Android Nougat update soon. The HTC Sense UI has several customisable theme and you can have near stock Android experience. The multi tasking was really smooth and the background apps are stored in RAM memory very well such that you can switch to them whenever you can and from where you left.  HTC Blink feed is also the best which comes with Sense UI.

The video or multimedia playback is good. The external speaker could have been little louder. The USB Type C ear phones supplied along with the box are good but not great as expected. The HTC BoomSound is replaced by HTC U Sonic which adjusts the sound in your earphones by scanning your ears so that you get the best output.

The main camera is a 16 megapixel shooter with dual tone single LED flash. It has F/2.0 aperture, Optical Image Stabilisation, 74.5 degree wide angle lens. It takes good pictures in bright light conditions. The colours are not over saturated and has good  detail reproduction. Though the camera performs less in low light condition with lot of noice it is no exception when compared to other phones in this department. The secondary camera is also a 16 megapixel camera and can record in full HD. The secondary camera also performs very well in good light conditions.

VERDICT
HTC U Play is a premium phone with pretty good features but I personally feel it is overly priced at nearly 40,000 INR. Such huge price can give better SoC's like Snapdragon 821. The battery is also quite underwhelming and is not reliable especially if you are a frequent traveller. There are plenty of other devices which offer great features with almost half price as HTC U play.
